Tomatin Distillery unveils the ultimate Father’s Day whisky gift guide

By on

It seems that Tomatin’s having a proper go at the Father’s Day market this year with a nicely thought-out approach that actually makes sense for once.

They’ve essentially segmented their core range around different “dad types” – and honestly, it’s not as gimmicky as it sounds. The lineup they’re pushing covers their bases well: the Double Cask at £37 for what they’re calling the “thrill-seeking dad,” the 12-Year-Old Sherry Cask at £50 for the “retro dad,” and the 18-Year-Old at £126 for the connoisseur.

Now, the Double Cask being positioned as adventurous is a bit of marketing stretch – it’s their entry-level expression with ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso maturation at 40% ABV. Solid enough dram, but hardly groundbreaking. The 12-Year-Old Sherry Cask is where things get more interesting – fully sherry matured, which gives it that rich, nostalgic character they’re banging on about.

The real standout here is obviously the 18-Year-Old. At 46% ABV with traditional oak and first-fill Oloroso sherry butts, it’s genuinely the jewel in their core range and probably their best value at that price point.

But here’s the clever bit – they’ve launched this “Mystery Whisky” initiative alongside the main push. Two tiers: Gold at £55 and Platinum at £85, with guaranteed value of at least £10 over what you pay, and potential for something significantly more valuable. It’s a smart move for people paralyzed by choice, though obviously you’re gambling on what lands in your box.

The distribution’s sensible too – Double Cask through Tesco and Amazon for mass market reach, while the older expressions stick to their own shop and specialist retailers where the margins and customer education are better.

All available through their website, naturally. It’s a well-orchestrated campaign that actually uses their range intelligently rather than just throwing bottles at the wall.
